It’s been a quiet month for the sport of boxing but no worries because things are bound to pick up starting this weekend with local card and then the following weeks promises to deliver more intriguing matchups. Here are some recent developments:
Sunday Feb. 21
Eye of the Tiger Management goes back to Gatineau at the Lac Leamy casino for a boxing card showcasing some of the best prospects from their stable of fighters. Among the boxers to keep an eye on are super middleweight Schiller Hyppolite who is headlining the vent, Mathieu Germain, Quebec’s 2015 prospect of the year, brothers Ayaz and Mian Hussain, two former Canadian amateur standouts, Simon Kean, a newly signed heavyweight and former Olympian. In addition, an all-Montreal matchup features Louisbert Altidor facing Roody Rene and former amateur Dany Croteau, Taylor Page and Vanessa Lepage Joannisse will make their pro-debut.
Saturday Feb. 27
The following weekend, get ready for a boxing marathon. First off, from Manchester arena in the UK, England’s Scott Quigg & Carl Frampton meet for a super bantamweight unification match with Quigg and Frampton putting their IBF and WBA world title on the line.
Later in the day on HBO, Terence Crawford will defend his WBO super lightweight title against Henry Lundy while the undercard features talented prospect, Puerto Rico’s Felix Verdejo.
In a different broadcast on Showtime, Leo Santa Cruz will headline the event, defending his WBA super featherweight title versus Spain’s Kiko Martinez.
